Udon Thani is one of the biggest cities of Isaan, Thailand's northeast: a practical, friendly place with good hotels, big markets and excellent regional food. The city itself is modern rather than beautiful, but it is the gateway to some remarkable sights - the pink Red Lotus Sea, the Bronze Age site of Ban Chiang and the rock formations of Phu Phrabat, both on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

One or two nights is enough for most travellers: one early morning on the lotus lake, one day trip into the countryside, and evenings in the night markets. It also makes a convenient stop on the way to Nong Khai and Laos.

Getting there & around

Udon Thani International Airport has many daily flights from Bangkok, taking about 1 hour. Overland, buses from Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal take roughly 8-9 hours, and trains on the Nong Khai line take around 9-11 hours, with overnight sleepers a comfortable option. Nong Khai and the Laos border are about an hour further north. In town, use Grab, tuk-tuks and songthaews; for the Red Lotus Sea, Ban Chiang and Phu Phrabat, hire a car with driver or rent a car, as public transport is slow.

The Red Lotus Sea

Udon's most photographed sight is the Red Lotus Sea, or Talay Bua Daeng, on Nong Han Kumphawapi lake about 45 km south-east of the city. From roughly December to February, the lake is covered with millions of pink lotus flowers, and local boatmen take visitors out among them. Go at sunrise: the flowers open in the morning and begin to close by around midday. Boats are hired per boat from the pier, so sharing with other travellers keeps costs down. Trips last about an hour and include stops at small shrines on the water; bring a hat, as there is little shade.

UNESCO sites & temples

East of the city, Ban Chiang is one of Southeast Asia's most important prehistoric sites, where excavations revealed Bronze Age burials and distinctive red-painted pottery - the museum and an open excavation pit tell the story well. To the north-west, Phu Phrabat Historical Park is a forested plateau of mushroom-shaped rocks, ancient boundary stones and rock paintings, inscribed by UNESCO in 2024. Further north, in the forested hills of Na Yung, the serene white marble reclining Buddha at Wat Pa Phu Kon makes another rewarding day trip.

Food & the evening

Udon is a great place to eat Isaan food at its source: fiery som tam, larb, grilled chicken, sour sausages and sticky rice, washed down with a cold beer. The UD Town area near the railway station has a busy night market with food stalls, and Nong Prajak Park is where locals jog, picnic and watch the sunset over the lake. A long-established expat community means there are also plenty of Western restaurants, pubs and live-music bars. Hotels range from good-value city business hotels to international chains near the malls, most within a short ride of the centre.

When to go

The cool, dry season from November to February is best, and it is also the only time to see the Red Lotus Sea in bloom. March to May is very hot, with temperatures often above 35 degrees, while the rainy season from June to October brings green rice fields and fewer visitors. Songkran in April is celebrated with enthusiasm here, as across Isaan. Whenever you come, start sightseeing early and save the hottest hours for a museum, a mall or a long lunch.
