Nan is one of northern Thailand's quiet treasures: an old walled Lanna town beside the Nan River, with beautifully preserved temples, a gentle pace and hardly any tour groups. For centuries it was a semi-independent kingdom, and its Tai Lue heritage shows in the murals, textiles and food. It is ideal for culture lovers, cyclists and travellers who have already done Chiang Mai and want somewhere more authentic.

Stay two to three nights - ideally over a weekend for the walking street - to explore the old town by bicycle and take a scenic mountain drive to the salt wells of Bo Kluea.

Getting there & around

Nan Nakhon Airport is just north of town and has daily flights from Bangkok Don Mueang, taking about 1.5 hours. Overnight buses from Bangkok take roughly 10-11 hours, and buses from Chiang Mai about 6 hours, many via Phrae. The old town is compact and flat, so walking or renting a bicycle is the nicest way to see it, while scooters, rental cars or a hired driver are needed for Bo Kluea, Doi Phu Kha and the outlying villages. Mountain roads are steep and winding.

Temples & old town

The star is Wat Phumin, a unique cross-shaped temple whose 19th-century murals include the much-loved image of a Tai Lue man whispering to a woman, now a symbol of Nan. Across the road, the Nan National Museum occupies the old royal palace. Nearby, Wat Ming Mueang is covered in intricate stucco, and a short ride out of town the golden chedi of Wat Phra That Chae Haeng rises above the valley. For sunset, climb to the standing Buddha at Wat Phra That Khao Noi. Most guesthouses and boutique hotels sit within or just outside the old town, so everything is close.

Mountains, salt wells & villages

The classic day trip climbs through the hills to Bo Kluea, where families still draw brine from ancient wells and boil it into mountain salt. Combine it with Doi Phu Kha National Park, known for its cool viewpoints and the pink blossoms of the rare Chomphu Phu Kha tree around February, and the peaceful village of Ban Sapan. North of town, Wat Nong Bua in Tha Wang Pha has Tai Lue murals and a weaving community next door. The drive to Bo Kluea takes around 2 hours each way, so start early and consider staying a night in the mountains.

Food & the evening

On weekend evenings (usually Friday to Sunday) the Nan Walking Street fills the lanes around Wat Phumin with food stalls, where locals sit on mats to eat northern dishes, sticky rice and grilled river fish while musicians play. Try khao soi, spicy nam phrik dips with vegetables and local sausage. The riverside along the Nan River is lined with simple restaurants, and the town has a growing number of relaxed cafes using coffee from the surrounding hills. Nightlife is low-key.

When to go

The cool season from November to February is the most pleasant, with fresh mornings and clear mountain views - and cold nights at Doi Phu Kha and Bo Kluea. From about February to April, smoke haze from burning can be heavy across the north. The rainy season brings lush rice fields and the traditional boat races on the Nan River, usually held around September to November at the end of Buddhist Lent. Thai holiday weekends get busy, so book ahead.
