Khon Kaen sits right in the heart of Isaan and is its most dynamic city: home to a major university, a young population, a fast-growing cafe culture and some of the best night markets in the northeast. It is not a place of grand monuments, but it is a superb introduction to Isaan life, food and craft, and a comfortable base for exploring silk villages, Khmer ruins and dinosaur country.

One or two nights works well - a day for the lake, the temple and the markets, and another for a day trip to Chonnabot or Phu Wiang. It also breaks up the journey between Bangkok and Udon Thani or Laos.

Getting there & around

Khon Kaen Airport has frequent daily flights from Bangkok, taking about 1 hour. Buses from Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal take around 6-7 hours, and trains on the Nong Khai line roughly 7-9 hours, with sleeper options. The railway continues north to Udon Thani and Nong Khai, and buses connect to most of Isaan. Around town, use Grab, tuk-tuks or the colour-coded songthaew routes; for Chonnabot, Phu Wiang and Ubolratana Dam, rent a car or hire a driver for the day.

Temple, lake & museum

The city's landmark is Wat Nong Wang, whose nine-tiered pagoda, Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon, is filled with murals of local history and legends, with city views from the top. It stands at the southern end of Bueng Kaen Nakhon, a lake ringed by a walking and cycling path that comes alive at sunset. For context, the Khon Kaen National Museum displays ancient Dvaravati boundary stones and prehistoric finds from across the region. Most hotels are clustered downtown, between the lake and the night markets, from business hotels to modern boutique stays, so evenings on foot or by Grab are easy.

Silk, dinosaurs & day trips

About an hour south-west, Chonnabot is renowned for mudmee silk, in which threads are tie-dyed before weaving, and you can watch weavers at work and buy directly from them. North-west of the city, Phu Wiang is one of Thailand's key dinosaur regions, with a well-designed museum and fossil sites in the national park - great with children. Further south, the sandstone Prasat Puay Noi is a quiet Khmer temple, while Ubolratana Dam is a popular spot for lakeside lunches. Each of these makes a comfortable half or full day out from the city.

Food & the evening

Khon Kaen is an Isaan food capital. Try the famous grilled chicken from Khao Suan Kwang, fiery som tam, sour Isaan sausages and a breakfast of kai krata, eggs served in a small pan. In the evening, Ton Tann Market offers street food, craft stalls and live music in a relaxed open-air setting, while the downtown night market is more traditional. Students fill the bars and cafes around Lang Mo, near the university, for cheap drinks and live bands.

When to go

The cool, dry months from November to February are the most comfortable, and around late November or early December the city hosts the Silk Festival, with parades, markets and silk shows. March to May is very hot, and Songkran in April is celebrated with big water fights around the city centre. The rainy season from June to October is greener and quieter, with afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain. Book ahead around university graduation dates and festivals, when hotels fill up.
