Frequently asked questions about planning a Thailand trip

How many days do I need for Thailand?
Two weeks is ideal for a first visit. That gives you about three nights in Bangkok, three or four in Chiang Mai and five or six on one island. With ten days, choose either the north or the islands; with three weeks you can add a second island or Khao Sok.
What is the best Thailand itinerary for a first trip?
A classic first route starts with Bangkok, then flies or takes the night train to Chiang Mai, and finishes on the beach. Krabi, Koh Lanta or Phuket suit the Andaman coast, while Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao cover the Gulf. Fly home from the nearest airport to save time.
When is the best time to visit Thailand?
November to February is the best time for most of the country, with dry weather and cooler temperatures. March to May is very hot. The Andaman coast is wettest from May to October, while the Gulf islands around Koh Samui are also good from January to August.
Should I choose the islands or northern Thailand?
It depends on what you enjoy. The north offers temples, mountains, night markets, cooking classes and ethical elephant sanctuaries around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The islands are about beaches, snorkelling and relaxing. With two weeks or more you can easily combine both in one trip.
How do I travel between regions and islands?
Domestic flights are cheap and quick, usually around one to one and a half hours between Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui. Overnight trains and buses save a night of accommodation. Ferries and speedboats link the islands, often sold as combined bus and boat tickets.
