What to do in Phuket?

For each activity you get up-to-date availability and prices — so you book ahead at the best rate.

Getting around & when to go

Phuket is large and public transport is weak, so Grab or a rented scooter/car are the practical options; the island's taxi and tuk-tuk cartel is notoriously overpriced, so use the app where you can. The airport is in the north, most beaches in the west and south, so factor in real driving time. The dry, calm season runs November to April; the May-October monsoon brings rougher seas and red-flag warnings - respect them, as the rip currents off the west beaches are genuinely dangerous.

Beaches & where to stay

Patong is the loud, neon centre - convenient and cheap but not pretty. Families and couples prefer Kata and Karon just south (nice sand, calmer), or the smarter Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao to the north. For seclusion and honeymoon resorts head to the far south around Nai Harn, or the quiet east coast around Panwa. Old Town stays put you among the cafes and street art rather than on a beach.

Highlights beyond the beach

Do not skip Phuket Old Town - pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cool cafes, street art and a Sunday walking street. Watch the sunset from Promthep Cape at the island's tip, and take a day trip by speedboat to Phang Nga Bay to kayak the sea caves around James Bond Island, or out to Phi Phi. The Big Buddha on its hill gives the best overview of the island.

Food & nightlife

Eat well at the old town night markets and local spots for Phuket specialities like Hokkien mee and moo hong pork. Nightlife peaks on Bangla Road in Patong - bars, clubs, cabaret and sheer sensory overload - which is either the point or the reason you stay south. Beach clubs and rooftop bars offer a smarter alternative for a sundowner.
