Railay is a small peninsula on the Krabi coast that feels like an island: sheer limestone cliffs cut it off from the mainland, so the only way in is by longtail boat. There are no roads and no cars, just a handful of beaches, jungle paths and some of the most dramatic scenery in Thailand. It is a magnet for rock climbers, couples and anyone who wants postcard beaches with a sense of adventure.
Two to three nights is ideal - enough for a climbing session or a kayak trip, the scramble up to the viewpoint and lagoon, an island-hopping day and a few slow sunsets on Railay West.

Fly from Bangkok to Krabi International Airport in about 1.5 hours, then transfer by taxi or minibus to Ao Nang (roughly 40-45 minutes). From Ao Nang beach, shared longtail boats run to Railay West in about 10-15 minutes, leaving once enough passengers have gathered; expect around 100-150 THB per person. Boats also run from Krabi Town and Ao Nam Mao to Railay East. In rough monsoon weather landings can be wet, so pack light. Once there, everything is reached on foot - Railay West and East are a five-minute walk apart.
Railay West is the showpiece: soft sand, calm water and upmarket resorts facing the sunset. Railay East is lined with mangroves and turns to mudflats at low tide, so it is not for swimming, but its guesthouses are cheaper and livelier. At the southern tip, Phra Nang Cave Beach is the jaw-dropper, with cliffs hanging over the sand and longtails selling lunch from the water. Budget travellers and climbers often head over to rustic Tonsai, a laid-back cove next door.
Railay is one of the world's great sport-climbing destinations, with hundreds of bolted routes on walls such as Thaiwand Wall and plenty of schools offering half-day introductions for beginners. Non-climbers can tackle the short but steep rope scramble to the Railay Viewpoint and the enclosed Hidden Lagoon - wear proper shoes, as it gets muddy and slippery. Kayaks can be rented on Railay West to paddle around the headland to sea caves and quiet coves, ideally around high tide.
Longtails from Railay join the classic Four Islands tour, taking in Koh Poda, Chicken Island and the sandbar at Tup Island that appears at low tide. Speedboat trips reach the emerald lagoon of the Hong Islands, and Phi Phi is an easy full-day excursion. Back on the mainland, the 1,260 steps of Tiger Cave Temple near Krabi Town reward an early start with sweeping views over the karst landscape. Closer to home, the short boardwalk through Diamond Cave behind Railay East makes a pleasant hour when the midday heat is at its fiercest.
Dining is mostly resort restaurants and simple Thai kitchens along the Walking Street between West and East; prices are higher than on the mainland because everything arrives by boat. Evenings are relaxed, with reggae bars and fire shows on Railay East, and most people are happily in bed early after a day on the rock. There are a few ATMs and small shops, but bring some cash from Ao Nang. The best time to visit is November to April, when seas are calm and skies clear; from May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain and choppier boat rides, though it is quieter and cheaper.
