The best 10-day Thailand itinerary for a first visit is 3 days in Bangkok for temples, markets and food, 3 days in Chiang Mai for old-city temples, mountains and an ethical elephant sanctuary, and 4 days on the Krabi coast for Railay, island-hopping and beaches. Budget roughly 15,500-24,000 THB (400-620 euros) per person on a shoestring or 28,500-45,000 THB (740-1,150 euros) mid-range, excluding international flights.
How this 10-day route works
Ten days is enough for the classic Thailand triangle: the capital, the cultural north and the tropical south. Any more stops and you spend your holiday in airports; any fewer and you miss one of the country's three very different faces. Our how many days in Thailand guide explains the trade-offs if you are still deciding on trip length.
- Route: Bangkok (3 nights) - Chiang Mai (3 nights) - Krabi coast (3 nights) - fly home via Bangkok on day 10.
- Transport: two domestic flights, each around an hour and usually 1,000-2,500 THB if booked a few weeks ahead. Book with a bag allowance included.
- Best season: November to April for this west-coast version. From June to October, swap Krabi for Koh Samui (see the Gulf variant below).
- Pace: one busy day follows one easier day, and nothing starts before 8:00, so you can recover from jet lag, eat well and still see the highlights. Build in a lazy afternoon whenever the heat gets too much; Thai midday sun from March to May is fierce.
Days 1-3: Bangkok
Stay near the river or along the BTS Skytrain so you can reach both the old city and the modern districts easily. For a more detailed version, see our Bangkok in 3 days itinerary.
- Day 1, arrival: land, pick up an eSIM or SIM, and take the Airport Rail Link or a taxi into town. Keep the afternoon easy: a Chao Phraya Express boat along the river at golden hour, then dinner and street food on Yaowarat Road in Chinatown, best after 18:00.
- Day 2, the old city: start at 8:30 at the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (500 THB), walk to Wat Pho and its reclining Buddha (300 THB), then cross by ferry to Wat Arun (200 THB). Rest through the midday heat, then see the city from a rooftop bar or the Mahanakhon SkyWalk at sunset.
- Day 3, markets and canals: on a weekend, spend the morning at Chatuchak Market; on a weekday, take a longtail boat through the Thonburi canals instead. Afternoon at Jim Thompson House, then a Muay Thai night at Rajadamnern or Lumpinee stadium, or a relaxed evening at Jodd Fairs night market.
Good to knowDress for temples on day 2: shoulders and knees covered, and shoes you can slip off easily. Ignore anyone outside the Grand Palace who tells you it is closed today; it is a well-known opener for a gem shop scam.
Days 4-6: Chiang Mai
Take a morning flight on day 4 (about 1 hour 15 minutes). The overnight sleeper train is a great experience but costs you a full day on this schedule; save it for longer trips. Our Chiang Mai in 3 days guide has more detail and alternatives.
- Day 4, the old city: check in inside or near the moat, then walk the old city temples: Wat Chedi Luang with its ruined chedi, Wat Phra Singh and the smaller Wat Chiang Man. Late afternoon, drive up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (entry around 30 THB) for the view over the city. If it is a Sunday, finish at the Sunday Walking Street on Ratchadamnoen Road; on Saturday, try the Wualai Road market.
- Day 5, elephants or a cooking class: spend the day at a genuine observation-only elephant sanctuary where there is no riding or bathing for show; expect 2,000-3,500 THB including transfers. Our ethical elephant sanctuary guide explains how to choose one. Prefer food? Book a half-day Thai cooking class with a market visit instead, typically 1,000-1,500 THB.
- Day 6, mountains and Nimman: take a day trip to Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest peak, with its twin royal chedis, Wachirathan waterfall and the Kew Mae Pan nature trail (park entry 300 THB). Back in town, have dinner around Nimmanhaemin Road, then try khao soi, the north's signature curry noodle soup, if you have not yet.
Days 7-10: Krabi, Railay and the islands
Fly from Chiang Mai to Krabi on the morning of day 7; there are direct flights most days, otherwise connect in Bangkok. Base yourself in Ao Nang for easy boat access and plenty of restaurants, or in Railay if you prefer car-free peace and are happy with fewer choices.
- Day 7, arrival in Ao Nang: transfer from the airport (about 40 minutes), check in and hit the beach. At sunset, take a longtail boat (around 100-150 THB per person each way) across to Railay for dinner on Railay West, one of Thailand's most beautiful beaches.
- Day 8, Railay: spend the morning on Phra Nang Beach, with its limestone cliffs and cave shrine, and climb to the viewpoint and lagoon trail if you are fit and wearing proper shoes. Rock climbing courses for beginners run from roughly 1,000-2,000 THB for a half day.
- Day 9, island-hopping: take a 4 Islands or Hong Islands longtail or speedboat trip (roughly 800-2,500 THB plus national park fees), or a full day to Koh Phi Phi and Maya Bay. Leave early to beat the crowds. Our Koh Phi Phi day trip guide compares the options.
- Day 10, departure: a last swim, then fly Krabi to Bangkok to connect with your international flight. Leave at least three hours between landing and your onward departure, or stay the final night in Bangkok near Suvarnabhumi.
Wondering whether Krabi or Phuket makes the better base? Krabi has the scenery and a calmer pace; Phuket has more nightlife and bigger resorts. Our Phuket vs Krabi comparison helps you decide.
Gulf variant for June to October
From roughly May to October the southwest monsoon brings heavier rain and rougher seas to the Andaman coast, and some boat trips are cancelled. The Gulf of Thailand is drier in July and August, so swap days 7-10 as follows:
- Day 7: fly Chiang Mai to Koh Samui (direct flights are limited, so you may connect in Bangkok), or fly to Surat Thani and take the bus and ferry combination. Settle into Chaweng, Lamai or quieter Bophut.
- Day 8: full-day boat trip to Ang Thong Marine National Park for kayaking and the viewpoint over the emerald lake.
- Day 9: explore Samui by car or scooter: Fisherman's Village in Bophut, the Big Buddha, Na Muang waterfalls and the beaches of the south coast. Or take a day trip to Koh Tao for snorkelling.
- Day 10: fly Samui to Bangkok for your onward flight.
Note that the Gulf gets its own rainy season from about late October to December, when the Andaman coast is at its best. So if you travel in November or December, stick with the Krabi version; if you travel in July or August, the Samui version is usually the safer bet for sunshine and calm seas.

In euros that is very roughly 400-620, 740-1,150 and 1,400-2,450 per person. Prices rise around Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year, so book flights and beach hotels early for those dates.
Before you go: practical checklist
- Entry: check current visa-exemption rules for your passport and complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within the three days before you arrive; it is free.
- Connectivity: an eSIM set up before departure means you can book Grab rides straight from the airport.
- Money: cards work in hotels and malls, but carry cash for markets, longtail boats and street food. Thai ATMs charge around 220 THB per foreign withdrawal, so take out larger amounts less often.
- Bookings: reserve the domestic flights first, then the Krabi hotel, then the Chiang Mai day tours. Everything else can be done on the spot.
- Packing: light clothes that cover shoulders and knees for temples, a light rain jacket, reef-safe sunscreen and sandals you can walk in.
- Health: drink bottled or filtered water and take travel insurance that covers scooters if you plan to ride one; many policies exclude riding without a motorcycle licence.
Ways to adapt the route
- More beach, less city: cut Bangkok to two nights and add a night on Koh Lanta or Koh Yao Noi for a quieter island finish.
- History lover: replace the Doi Inthanon day with a day trip from Bangkok to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya on day 3.
- Travelling with children: keep the same structure but choose Ao Nang over Railay for easier logistics and calmer beaches, and swap Muay Thai night for an early dinner at a night market.
- Have more time? Our 3-week Thailand itinerary adds Kanchanaburi, Pai or Chiang Rai, Khao Sok and more islands.
Frequently asked questions
Is 10 days enough for Thailand?
Yes, for a first visit. Ten days covers Bangkok, Chiang Mai and a beach area without rushing, provided you use domestic flights between the regions. Adding more stops than three usually makes the trip feel hurried.
What is the best route for 10 days in Thailand?
Bangkok for 3 nights, Chiang Mai for 3 nights and Krabi or the nearby islands for 3 nights, flying between them. From June to October, swap Krabi for Koh Samui on the Gulf coast.
How much does a 10-day trip to Thailand cost?
Roughly 15,500-24,000 THB per person on a budget, 28,500-45,000 THB mid-range and 54,000 THB or more for comfort, excluding international flights.
Should I take the night train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai?
It is a memorable experience but takes 11-13 hours, which costs a full day on a 10-day trip. On a short trip, the one-hour flight is the better use of time.
When is the best time for this itinerary?
November to April is ideal for the Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Krabi version. From June to October, use the Gulf variant with Koh Samui instead of Krabi.
