Koh Mook, sometimes spelled Koh Muk, is the island most people only see on a day trip to the famous Emerald Cave - and that is their loss. Stay the night and you find a friendly, largely Muslim fishing island with a real village, rubber plantations, a scattering of simple guesthouses and resorts, and one of the loveliest sunset beaches in the Trang islands. It suits independent travellers and couples who like a bit of local life with their beach.
Two or three nights works well: time to visit the Emerald Cave when the crowds have gone, cycle between village and beach, and hop to Koh Kradan or Koh Ngai for snorkelling.

Fly or take the overnight train to Trang, then travel about an hour by minivan to Kuantungku pier, from where longtails cross to the island in around 20-30 minutes. Boats from Pak Meng pier also serve Koh Mook, and in high season speedboats connect it with Koh Lanta, Koh Ngai, Koh Kradan and Koh Lipe. Boats land at the village pier on the east coast. The island is small, so you get around on foot, by rented bicycle or motorbike, or by motorbike-sidecar taxi to Charlie Beach in about 10 minutes.
The west coast is where most visitors stay. Charlie Beach (Hat Farang) is a curve of soft sand between limestone headlands, with bungalows, small resorts and beach bars facing the sunset. On the east side near the pier, the Sivalai area has a striking white sandbar and a more secluded, upmarket feel. Budget guesthouses cluster around the village and on the road to Hat Farang. Accommodation is mostly simple and friendly rather than luxurious, and in peak season the best sunset-facing bungalows are worth booking ahead. Swimming at Hat Farang is best around high tide, as the water gets shallow at low tide.
Tham Morakot, the Emerald Cave, is Koh Mook's star attraction: you swim or float through a pitch-black tunnel of roughly 80 metres, guided by torchlight, and emerge onto a small beach enclosed by towering cliffs and jungle. At midday it fills with tour groups, so go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, ideally by kayak or chartered longtail. Access depends on the tide, and a Hat Chao Mai National Park entry fee applies. Bring a waterproof torch or join a guide, and avoid the swim if the swell is up.
The fishing village near the pier is the heart of the island, with stilt houses, mosques, children cycling to school and small stalls selling roti, curries and iced tea. Dress modestly away from the beach out of respect for local customs, and note that alcohol is harder to find in the village than on Hat Farang. For dinner, the beach restaurants on Charlie Beach grill fresh seafood as the sun goes down behind the islands, and a few cafes serve good Thai coffee and smoothies.
The best period is November to April, with calm seas, clear water and all island-hopping routes running. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain and waves; many west-coast bungalows close, and the Emerald Cave can be closed on rough days. The village and some guesthouses stay open all year, so low season can still reward flexible travellers with empty beaches and lower prices. Around Ramadan, village food stalls may keep reduced daytime hours.
